¡Bienvenidos! Welcome!
We’re excited to bring you the second-ever edition of our newsletter written by our own members!
In this edition, you’ll find exciting updates of what our chapter brought onto campus this semester. We hosted various events, including a fun
game night, a scary movie night, and an exciting Latin Dance Night for everyone to enjoy! High school students got in on the fun through our biggest outreach event of the semester – Si Se Puede.
You’ll also read a touching story from one of our SHPE members about his experience on our record-breaking trip to the 2023 SHPE National Convention!
Plus, we’ll fill you in on the exciting things we did over the summer and how you can learn more about our chapter and how to get involved!
Game Night
Per tradition, we kicked-off our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with a game night co-hosted with NSBE and Strategic Diversity Initiatives at the SDI House. We enjoyed the nice weather outside, where students took part in conversations, enjoyed snacks, and competed in Lotería and trivia about Hispanic culture. We even had a guest appearance by the Vice Chancellor of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Dr. Nicole Roberson, who won a round of Lotería! She shared, “It was a fun evening filled with laughs and shouts of joy when someone won Lotería!” It was the perfect start to a fun-filled month!

Latin Dance Night
As the last event to close out Hispanic Heritage month, we danced the night away to the vibrant rhythms of Latin music. Latin Dance Night was an action-packed event where students were taught Bachata and Salsa by the Aerial Swing Dance Club. Towards the end of the event, homemade empanadas were served to sate the hunger from restless dancing. It was an experience filled with laughter, exhilaration, and a newfound appreciation for the rich traditions of Latin dance.

Celebration of Nations
Celebration of Nations brings together the vibrant cultures and countries of our community through amazing food and beautiful performances. At the 14th annual Celebration of Nations, SHPE had the pleasure of representing several Latin countries, including Puerto Rico and Mexico. Our stall was a hit, selling turkey tacos, pan de queso, and horchata. Soon enough, SHPE had sold out! This Celebration of Nations, SHPE’s goal was to show our love of Hispanic and Latin culture to others, and SHPE as a Familia did exactly that!

Tostada Fundraiser
In our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we organized a fundraising initiative for Nationals by offering delicious Tostadas and refreshing Agua de Jamaica. It was truly enjoyable to share elements of our culture with students throughout the campus. Notably, SHPE students took the initiative to prepare the food, ensuring that the tostadas were entirely homemade!

SHPE Outings
Our SHPE chapter had two outings this semester. We went to Swing Around Fun Town, an amusement park with go-karting, arcade games, and much much more! We also had a scary movie night for Halloween where we ate carne asada tacos. We have these outings to create memories and build a stronger sense of community and family within our chapter.

Si Se Puede
In the fall semester, our chapter’s Resilience Committee took the lead in organizing Si Se Puede, our flagship outreach event. This initiative is designed to give high school students a firsthand experience of college life, introduce them to S&T, and jumpstart their journey in STEM. From Friday, November 11th to Sunday, November 13th, SHPE-S&T welcomed 11 high school students for the program. Take a glimpse into some of the engaging activities that filled this bustling weekend!

National Convention
This year, the SHPE National Convention was held in Salt Lake City, Utah November 1st through 5th. The theme of “Join the Hive”, as Utah is known as the Beehive state, was well represented in the fast paced but fun environment of the convention. The Missouri S&T chapter brought 27 outstanding members to engage in professional development workshops, network with companies and other students, and grow closer as a Familia.

Student Testimony – Pablo Espindola Chavarria
Student Testimony – Pablo Espindola Chavarria “I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible opportunity I had at the SHPE 23 National Convention. The experience offered me invaluable social, professional, and personal growth that will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors.
“I am particularly grateful for winning one of the golden tickets at the opening ceremony! Skipping the line at the Career Fair entrance afforded me the precious opportunity to engage with all the employers I had set my sights on within just a couple of hours. This head start was instrumental in fostering meaningful conversations and connections that might have otherwise been challenging to establish.
“Furthermore, I’m excited to share that I received an offer from Lockheed Martin, a significant milestone in my career journey! I had a long and enriching conversation with one of their Vice Presidents, an experience that left an indelible mark on my aspirations and provided invaluable insights.
“Perhaps one of the most awe-inspiring moments was meeting the Engineering Lead responsible for communications between Earth and the International Space Station. We both share a passion for RF engineering and wireless communications. His wisdom, advice, and uplifting encouragement were beyond measure, leaving an everlasting impact on my perspective and aspirations.

“The SHPE 23 National Convention has truly been a significant experience that has equipped me with the tools, connections, and confidence necessary to embark on my career path. Once again, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors whose support made this transformative experience possible.”

SHPE Intramural
This is SHPE’s first year trying out intramural teams! Our Futsal intramural team had a great season. They won the first round of playoffs but were unfortunately eliminated in a nail-biting game by the undefeated Pi Kappa Alpha. We are hoping to include more intramural teams next semester and recruit an Intramural Rep to help organize!
